May was aMAYzing for us. We finally kicked the bucket on my student loans – all $18,000+ of them. That alone was initial my goal on this ‘debt free journey.’ I know obviously I have a whole lifetime of a journey left, but I am celebrating, and will be for a while, the fact that I’m 24 and I have paid all of that off already, especially amidst the changing rates under the current political climate.
I don’t care who gets tired of hearing about it. After paying off my loans, we spent the rest of the month building back our emergency fund and a few other sinking funds that kinda disappeared when we were being so gazelle with Nelnet. In addition to that, we finally got the final price on James’ surgery – $5,000. So now we will tackle that from June to August.
Here’s what we started out with: $50,896.71
Here’s what we’ve paid off since 1/4/16: $37,681.93
Here’s the medical debt: $194 (paid) + $3,924 (hospital) + $958 (specialist) + $23.26 (another specialist)
Here’s what we’ve got left to go: $18,670.26
This month we paid off a total of $2,652.68
